Ghosts feeding Gramps, Julio & Bill

Hello and Welcome to the newest edition of My Lovely Horse Rescue’s Newsletter!

The Spooky month of October was a busy month here on the farm. Beautiful pony Basil stayed at UCD for a few weeks, the MLHR donkey herd gained two new members, and the farm was invaded by ghosts on the 31st of October…

Basil’s trip to UCD

In the end of september, when Basil was released in the field with his friend Justo, the little pony went downhill due to his condition called Equine Motor Neurone disease (EMND). This disease causes progressive damage to nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord of adult horses that causes muscle wasting,  weakness, weight loss and shifting of weight between the limbs. Basil was brought back to the yard and watched closely by the team. However, his condition deteriorated and after a while,  he had to go to UCD Veterninary Hospital to receive the adequate treatment. After two weeks, Basil came back to the main farm where he can finish his recovery peacefully, and receive lots of cuddles. The whole team loves Basil and the little pony is showered with treats, and scratches.

Donkey fever on the farm

Jasper was the first donkey to be rescued last month, he was found straying in Dublin inner city. In the morning, a woman found him in front of her house when she was leaving for work. Dublin City Council picked him up that same day and he spent a week in the horse pound before coming into our care. With his very loud and majestic bray, Jasper made a strong impression among the volunteers, his lovely face and natural interest in cuddles made everyone’s hearts melt, even when he gives a free concert in the middle of the night!! He is now being treated for a little infection at UCD, we wish him a good recovery and hope to hear him sing again very soon…

Approximately a week after, a second singer arrived on the farm to accompany Jasper with his fabulous backing vocals. Finnian, the ghost looking donkey, was found tied to the boot of a car in someone’s garden. He was seized under welfare, and spent 5 days in the pound before coming into our care. He went straight to a fabulous foster home in Cork where he had a very nice week before heading to the main farm where he met Jasper. Both donkeys are now singing day and night for their beloved volunteers, who give them food and a lot of cuddles! Finnian, like Jasper, loves cuddles and shakes his head out of satisfaction when having his ears scratched. He is a young, curious donkey with a very bright future ahead of him.

Ghosts volunteers

Finally, on the eerie morning of the 31th of October, a bunch of ghosts volunteered on the main farm. Halloween brought multiple ghostly figures to the yard, from cleaning stables, feeding animals or even trying to rob Peter the tractor, these ghosts had a nice day at MLHR. The animals were pretty unbothered, as the ghosts were rather animal friendly and carried a lot of treats (do not ask how, they were special ghosts). Charlotte the pig enjoyed the  company of three lovely ghosts during her afternoon nap in Oink Room, dreaming of all the pumpkins she will be given once Halloween season is over…

Who’s That Wonderful Boy? Could He Be Any Cuter?

Meet Nigel:

“Five years have passed; five summers, with the length

Of five long winters! And again I feel

These waters, rolling from my sweet-brown eyes”

Lines written a few miles above the Dry Standings, on revisiting the Fences of the Yard during a tour, September 27, 2024. Nigel, about his life.

Indeed, poet Nigel is single, and desperate.

His height surely plays a role in this, we all know how hard it is for a small pony like him to be even considered by our sublime mares. Yet, the gorgeous pony does not give up and is now looking higher than ever, he is looking for a home. With more than one verse up his maine, the romantic pony will recite his most beautiful poetry to the sensitive soul who will give him food and shelter.

To finish this newsletter, we will leave you to these wonderful pictures of our favourite volunteers spreading happiness on the yard, posing with models Bronntanas, Daphne and Julio!

Donations are essential in the every day life of My Lovely Horse Rescue. Indeed, with over 700 animals in total, the costs of food supplies, veterinary bills and all the expenses related to the well being of the animals are very important and without donations (without you), the rescue could not go on and save more animals in a difficult position.

Whether it is for a horse, a goat, a pig or a dog, the animals will appreciate it.

Gladys the goat will keep munching high quality hay, Nova the dog will bring more toys on her daily walks, Sebastian the pig will keep smiling (even on rainy days) and young Avery will turn into a stunning grown-up donkey…

CBD Science Ltd. has been incredibly generous in gifting products to the MLHR residents and in sponsorsing our newsletter. Their lavendar and eucalyptus healing salve is a particular favourite with the animals in our care. Not only does it smell amazing but it is made from natural and organic products, oils, and beeswax and is infused with 10% broad spectrum CBD – perfect for soothing irritated skin and scars.

Our donkey friend Gramps is prone to dry and lumpy skin on his nose and ears which can become cracked and sore. Since using this product we have seen huge improvements in Gramps’ skin and the lavendar and eucalyptus healing salve is now a part of his daily skin-care regime. It’s amazing on human skin too so please do check it out!

Under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, only Authorised Officers (An Garda Síochána; Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Inspectors; and County Councils/Local Authority Inspectors) are permitted to seize animals, to enter private property, to carry out investigations or to bring prosecutions. MLHR assists Authorised Officers with their work and for this reason, it is vital that members of the public reporting incidents to MLHR also report to the relevant Authorised Officers so that we can liaise with and help them move animals out of harm’s way and into safety.

What you can do

1. Provide us with a description of the animal(s) at risk and the nature of the incident.
2. Send us a pin drop or accurate description of the location.
3. Take Photographs/Video footage but only if it is safe to do so.
4. Tell us which Authorised Officer or Garda station you have contacted.

How to make contact with Authorised Officers

• An Garda Síochána – A list of Garda stations is available online at https://www.garda.ie/en/contact-us/station-directory/

• Local Authorities (for incidents on Public land) https://www.gov.ie/en/help/departments/#local-authorities

• ISPCA for emergencies call 1890 515515 (Monday to Friday 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Welfare concerns can http://www.ispca.ie/cruelty_complaint

• Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine – for incidents on private land phone 01 607 2379 or 0761 064 408 or email [email protected]

I am so impressed with the care you are giving to all of the animals you have rescued. Loved the photos and comments on their personalities. I do make a monthly
contribution to you and wish it could be more. If I win the lotto, your organization is first on the list for a big fat cheque

Although I wish you didn’t need to exist I am so glad that you do. You are always there for any animal in need and not just to rescue but to care for them and give them a second chance to have a life they deserve. I admire all the work you do from fundraising to animal care, from farm maintenance to fostering and adoption, you are truly amazing!
